Olas para Todos: Creating Waves of Change in San Blas, Mexico
In San Blas, Mexico, former surf champion José Manuel Cano Guerrero, better known as “Pompis,” has transformed his passion for surfing into a mission of hope and opportunity. His initiative, “Olas para Todos” (“Waves for Everyone”), aims to make surfing accessible to the local youth and children with disabilities.

A Champion’s Vision
Pompis, who played a major role in popularizing the sport of surfing in Mexico, started efforts to recognize the pioneers of surfing in San Blas alongside his own competitive career. Beyond offering surfboard rentals and lessons, his vision for the surf club is to empower young people and promote inclusion in the sport. As a member of the San Blas Surf Club, Pompis is also committed to identifying and mentoring promising young surfers, guiding them toward national championships.

Surfing for Everyone
At the heart of his program “Olas para Todos” is the belief that surfing should be for everyone. Children can participate in free courses and borrow equipment for free, as long as they stay committed to their education. This innovative approach links the excitement of surfing with the discipline of learning, encouraging a balanced and purposeful lifestyle.

For children with disabilities, Pompis is involved in the “Olas Mágicas” (“Magic Waves”) program. This initiative offers therapeutic sessions where children experience the joy and freedom of the waves, with the support of trained surfers. Depending on the child, up to 3-4 helpers may be needed. These sessions have brought moments of pure joy to both the children and their families. The program is ongoing and expanding.
